screen + mrxvt + irssi charset problems

I'm finding that running irssi via screen prints characters wrong.

I have charset in irssi set to CP1252 which works fine without screen.

I have googled for hours looking for settings to change in my .screenrc to no avail.

If anyone knows anything about this I would be very grateful
