screen goes black in gnome

OK this is driving me crazy, hopefully someone has an idea about this.

I'm using FC2 w/gnome for my graphical desktop. If I leave myself logged in the screen saver will come on after awhile which is fine but after a certain amount of time (I'm not sure how long) the screen goes black and I can't resume my session. If I wiggle my mouse the screen flickers but doesn't do anything. This also happens if I turn my monitor off and walk away for awhile.

Here is the weird thing, if I hit the powerbutton on the front of my computer the machine apparently goes through a normal shutdown procedure because when I reboot, it doesn't force a disk check or even ask me.

I'm loading my kernel with the apm=off flag as well.

Any thoughts??

You may use the "xset -dpms" command to disable Energy Star in X, if this appears to be the problem.
