openoffice is a open derivat of Sun's StarOffice.
in my opinion is OpenOffice 95% compareable to M$ Office.
you have features like generating diagramms from data-sources(spread-sheat or ODBC),
consolidate data and the excel-standard formulas.

openoffice includes something like Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

ok I will try that then...
my chef says that openoffice is like staroffice and their chartprograms aren
't as fuctional as excel .. i wouldn't like it to be forced to use Win ..
any more ideas of programs I can use and which are free ?

I found this thread on google, which discusses the relative merits of scientific plotting software in linux. The poster highly recommends a combination of gnumeric (a gnome-based spreadsheet, that my accountant wife says is comparable to Excel XP) and guppi (gnome-based scientific plotting tool).

The guppi project page also has links to other scientific plotting software.

You may also want to check out SciGraphica, another GPL scientific plotting package.
