School software search
 

Hi folks!

I'm currently trying to brainwash the school where my mother works into using Linux. So far its been going great, but I got a request and so far haven't been able to comply. Here's what I need:

A piece of software that can create (manage, whatever) school schedules. Its two schools in one actually (thats complicated) and they need to create the schedules considering time constraints, staff availability, different time spans and whatnot.

Ive been looking for something but so far got nothing. So... when search engines fail... I turn to the community. Has anybody out there seen something like this?

What are they using now? I would think you could do something in a spreadsheet for it. All depends on what they want it to do. If not a spreadsheet I'm sure if we knew what they where using now somebody here could recommend something that would pretty much do the same thing.

He he he, believe or not they have been doing it manually. A task that takes them quite sometime and that almost certainly have to redo constantly.

It depends on how they want to do it. This could become a very involved project.

Open Office 2 contains everything they need, more than likely. It has both a spreadsheet and a database. They would have to configure the database.

Or, they may prefer a project manager. There is Imendio Planner, which is part of Gnome.

There is also KOffice, which includes Kivio (flowcharter) and Kplato (project manager)

They need something in the lines of Mimosa, Timetabler or aSc Timetables. The problem is that while these programs work with US school systems they don't with Mexican school systems or at least not with the one I need.

I was thinking that eventually it might be easier to create a program for their needs. The problem being that my programming skills in Linux amount to zero. And while Im somewhat experiencied programming C++ in windows, Ive been giving it a try in my head and keep failing to imagine a possible solution to the schedule matrix needed.
