saw the new KDE and fell in love..

I haven't used linux for many years, simple because I'm a gamer and I could never get games to work very well on linux.. But I seen KDE and now I want linux as my OS, but I don't know if I should.. I've seen the Cedega for running games on linux, but is this just going turn my fps from smooth to lag? I play far cry, quake 3, and fear currently on a 7800 gt.. So can someone tell me if the games will play the same or not and which distro to get? thanks a lot

You should check out the gamesdb at http://transgaming.com and see if your games are listed as working. To me it seems like games run faster on linux than in windows in some cases because linux is less processor hungry but there are some games that dont work properly or lag a little bit. However, you should have good luck for the most part. You seem like you have some experience in linux already so I would reccomend you take a intermediate/expert distro such as suse, kubuntu, or fedora. You need to make sure you get the NVIDIA drivers installed or else your games will have no 3d acceleration. Have fun!

will this be like when I install x64 and my printer wouldn't work? because I just can't deal with that again... also the distro I checked out on another computer was slackware. i didn't have to do anything really.. why choose one of the others over that?

There's quite a few pinned threads detailing the pros + cons of different distros compared to Slackware. Check out the 'Reviews' section on these forums too. That will give a good overview of the different distros available. Most will work fine once the appropriate 3d drivers have been installed, and as for your printer, check the HCL on these forums again to check configuration instructions.

An alternative is to simply remove your video card from your case, pack it into something soft and then let me know. I'll contact you with an address to post it to. Then you can go back to word processing and web browsing, things that linux is really good at

On a serious note, Far Cry plays well under Cedega, Quake 3 has a native client, as does Quake 4 and a few other major first person shooters. FEAR is pretty new isn't it? You'd need to check the Transgaming website but I don't know. Is it a decent game? I'm a bit of a gamer myself and it looked alright from the previews but it's the kind of game thats either really awesome or really crap, depending on whether they've pulled it off correctly or not...
