samba3 and smbpasswd3

Ok you guys are my last chance so here goes...

I tried to install samba3 via .rpm but Im getting a M$ password error (dont know it specifically, Im at work).

Ok so samba3 is installed I have and files setup for very basic operation until I get it working.
smb.cfg
Code:
#======================= Global Settings =====================================

[global]
   workgroup = WORKGROUP
   log file = /var/log/samba3/log.%m
   max log size = 50
; log level = 3
   smb passwd file = /usr/bin/smbpasswd3
   socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
   case sensitive = no

#============================ Share Definitions ==============================

[home]
   path = /home/username
   browseable = no
   writable = yes

[stuff]
   path = /usr/share/stuff
   public = yes
   writable = yes
   valid users = username

#================================== <EOF> ====================================
lmhosts file:
Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.1 servername
192.168.0.2 workstationname
ok, now the problem....I noticed the smbpasswd file within the samba3 directory doesnt work:
Code:
[root@servername samba3]# ls
lmhosts      smb.conf      smbldap_conf.pm  smbusers
secrets.tdb  smb.conf.old  smbpasswd        smb-winbind.conf
[root@empiricus samba3]# smbpasswd -a username
bash: smbpasswd: command not found
But I did notice there is the file smbpasswd3 in the /usr/bin dir BUT the permissions are
-rw------- 1 root root 838956 Feb 17 23:15 smbpasswd3
if I change the rights so root can execute the file appears to work fine, I get new user added...etc....
BUT the strange thing is that the permissions change back, removing execute?????? Anyone ever hear of something like this?

So I restart smbd3, goto my M$ machine and try to connect again the passwords still dont work.

The samba logs read:
[2004/03/10 10:56:17, 0] passdb/pdb_smbpasswd.c:getsmbfilepwent(376)
getsmbfilepwent: malformed password entry (no

After this Im pretty much lost. I know I have connectivity, I am being prompted for a logon and pass. Firewall should allow everything coming from the workstation (I can post the script too if needed) but its just not working.

Please help... I will affero you until the day I die!!!!
The GNUbie

I have decided to drop this rpm junk and try to compile it. Wish me luck
