Samba - Users cant change passwords on windows side

Hello All.

Samba ver 3.0.25b-1.1.cc

SMB.Conf

admin users = administrator
unix password sync = yes
os level = 65
security = user
encrypt passwords = yes
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
syslog = false
netbios name = server
domain master = yes
domain logons = yes
passwd program = /usr/sbin/userpasswd %u
passwd chat = *password:* %n\n *password:* %n\n *successfully.*
add machine script = /usr/sbin/useradd -d /dev/null -g samba-clients -s /bin/fa$
workgroup = WKGROUP
realm = WKGROUP.LOCAL

Is there anything in my config that will lead to this error
message?

Domain users cant change their password by pressing control alt
delete. They get an error message stating the domain doesnt exist.

All users are on domain, authenticating properly, accessing shares/home directories, etc.

I cant find anything in the logs where should I look?
Thoughts?

Hi Jeff,

Well for the samba log file you can have a look to "/var/log/log.samba"
if nothing is logged you will have to enable the debug mod in your "smb.conf"

1. Change the "log level" value to "5"
2. Restart the samba daemon and reproduce the issue.
3. Then have a look to "/var/log/log.samba" again, you should see what is going on

when you finish to troubleshoot don't forget to turn the debug back off or to a lower value and restart again the samba daemon for the changes to take effect.

Angel.

I'm not sure if it's the problem, but why are you using 'userpasswd' as the password change program? On my system (Fedora), userpasswd is a graphical front end that has no arguments. Shouldn't you just use 'passwd'?

I'm not sure why that was part of the SMB template we used.

On other servers i've seen passwd program = /usr/bin/smbpasswd %u

I'm not sure which to use and why

You're right, you should be using smbpasswd, not passwd. smbpasswd changes the samba login password stored in (at least on Fedora) /etc/samba/smbpasswd, while passwd is for the unix accounts on the host box. Try it with 'smbpasswd %u' and see how you get on.

Oh well, it was just a guess. Is there anything in the logs when you increase the verbosity (as angel115 suggested)?
