Well for the samba log file you can have a look to "/var/log/log.samba"
if nothing is logged you will have to enable the debug mod in your "smb.conf"
1. Change the "log level" value to "5"
2. Restart the samba daemon and reproduce the issue.
3. Then have a look to "/var/log/log.samba" again, you should see what is going on
when you finish to troubleshoot don't forget to turn the debug back off or to a lower value and restart again the samba daemon for the changes to take effect.
I'm not sure if it's the problem, but why are you using 'userpasswd' as the password change program? On my system (Fedora), userpasswd is a graphical front end that has no arguments. Shouldn't you just use 'passwd'?

Reason: grammar
You're right, you should be using smbpasswd, not passwd. smbpasswd changes the samba login password stored in (at least on Fedora) /etc/samba/smbpasswd, while passwd is for the unix accounts on the host box. Try it with 'smbpasswd %u' and see how you get on.
