samba user and share access?
 

This is actually two question about some issues I'm having with Samba.

1) I'm trying to configure samba to have both anonymous access to some public shares, but also users with passwords to be able to access their home directories through the "homes" share. They say if you want to have the anonymous access to set the security mode to SHARE and if you want users to access their home directories to set it to USER. Can you not mix the two? Right now I have it set to SHARE and it works fine for the anonymouse ones, but when I try to access the homes share I get problems. Windows brings up the logon dialoug box, but it has the username pre-filled in to guest and I can't change it. When I put a valid username and password into another linux box it just doesn't display anything under the homes share.



2) When I write some new files to the anonymous public shares they are writen with the permissions 755 even though the parent directory has 777. How can I get samba to write with 777 permissions? I'd like other users to be able to edit, move, delete the files as well.

1) In Windows Explorer, Tools > Connect to network drive (or whatever that is, I'm using an intl version) then you'll see an option to connect using a different username/password.

OK, that lets me specify a login name and password, but the share still doesn't work unless I set it to user mode on Samba.

Any more ideas?

I have the EXACT same issue! And I haven't for the life of me figured out how to do it. I have one directory on the linux box that I want EVERYBODY to see, no matter what, don't even want a logon prompt. Then I myself want access to another folder, with a username and password. The security = user vs security = share debate rages on. But I've been on both MandrakeUsers and this forum before with no answer yet.
