samba swat = dumb head
 

okay simply i've installed samba with swat on gentoo
this is the 3rd distro (redhat, debian) that i've installed on and i can't authenticate with swat
this issue has been occuring for two years
im slightly frusterated with this issue
i've modified my pam files and compiled samba --with-pam, modified my /etc/xinetd.d/swat file and read through every damn forum ... ever created
yada yada
i've done everything short of choking the developer(addresses would be appreciated)
heres an out put of my auth.log
no one seems to mention this as an issue so hopefully this will help someone help me

did you create root user with smbpasswd? I think this might be useful. Then use this root user at the wat console to log in.

hmm now thats kinda odd
any ideas?

samba has its own password database. First you have to create it. I think this has to be done with the commpand smbpasswd too, but Im not sure. Read the manpages for smbpasswd, there should be more info.

yeah i got it working with smbpasswd -a root
it failed out with a slightly different error but still said unable to open passdb
then i did it again and it said
root password changed
then it worked

a little swat documentation would be awesome but the only documentation that samba provides is about two paragraphs long + man page

Ive tried the setup on 2 distros and when i had the most problems I would just setup up webmin which has an option for converting all unix users to samba users and samba to unix plus a sync betwen the two.
Although alot of people dont like webmin.

webmin s cool, but unless you really need it, it is not necessary to set it up. Its just another daemon running and listening on the net (and so a potential security hole)

But well, its fun :-)
