samba quirk -- formfeeding

Hey all...

Just up'd a box from 166Mhz to a 400Mhz build. And went from SuSE 7.2 to 8.0.

All went well with install, and everything is configured pretty much exactly as before.

After installing samba, and setting up everything, the printer starts to act flaky.

For some reason, after each print job, it form feeds a single sheet from the printer. It never did this before, and I don't have any settings enabled for FF on either the client or server.

BUT, it ONLY FFs from client machines. Not from the box the printer iz connected to.

SMB.CONF file is really really simpilfied.
I'll even post it ... just because I know someone will ask for it.

[global]

ok.. so in my OLD smb.conf on the old box, I ONLY had the global, the RAW, and the printers section.
However, the old printers section didn't have but 3 lines as apposed to this one. For somereason tho, this is what I had to do to get it to actually let the users print... IT constraints... wacky network around here. Anyway...

So if anyone can offer advice on the spooky FF prob that'd be kewl.

Just check to make sure the default paper size didn't change during the upgrade.
And also look at the server's postscript driver.
You may try changing it from the HP Laserjet6M driver to the Generic postscript driver.

I use the command line configuration tools for this, (coz I have to ssh into mine)

Newer Samba has more options and better security...

Kewl. Tnx 4 reply. Paper is still 'Letter' standard.

I'll look into the ps drv.

Are you using CUPS for printing? If so this might help -

Cheers

kewl. I was already reading the same page.. actually the similar one on SuSE8.0 but who's counting eh? :)

not using CUPS tho. Currently using LPD. Might have to switch to CUPS because I've tried alot of different scenarios just trying to get this to work the correct way. I'd pull my hair out if I hadn't shaved it all off!

Anywho, I'm guessing that there is something wrong with me lil lpd print calls. I'll nose around there and see what I can come up with.

P.s. heh.. i did try a number of changes regarding printer drivers and such... most of what is already packaged with SuSE tho.
I actually made some progress. I got it to FF a page before and after now... hehe :) hey, I didn't say it was positive progress.

Ok.. so I saw:

3.3.1 SuSE Linux
SuSE ships with a modified version of apsfilter which is derived from an earlier release (of the 4.x series). These are incompatible in installation and usage, and support for their version is only available from SuSE.

However, you can uninstall the SuSE package and install the original tarball without any problems. In this case, installing printers is only possible with the SETUP script, not via yast or other SuSE configuration tools.

Now... is it the version of the filter? or is it the new version of the Ghostscript driver?
Tough to tell. Not finding much docs on info between SuSE7.2 to SuSE8.0 regarding changes in ghostscript drvs or the filters.

hmmm...

Ok. Found it!!!

Found a vibe thru another thread group.

:sf:\

I added the above to my printcap file and... voila!
Go figure... something in SuSE distro changed. I'm gonna have to look into this one.

Tnx for the help guyz.
