Samba missing files / and directory's

Hello all,

I've setup Ububtu Linux to be the central fileserver for my company on wich Samba runs greatly, no problems upon now. I begin to reconize that certain files and directory's are dissapearing! This is, as you might know, a huge problem. We can't afford losing data, though we have backups. Has anyone ever seen such a problem before / and if so- is there a sollution for this problem. The server ran Microsoft Windows before Ubuntu, and I really don't want to switch back to that. Samba is a nice application, I even use it for my personal documents at home, since my notebook runs XP. Thanks in advance!

The only time I seen a harddrive randomly lose folders/files was on my personal system and it was because the harddrive was dieing on me.

Personally I never seen a harddrive take that "approach", cause usually it just "dies", but this is one option I can give you, and that is maybe ghost the backup onto a new drive, pop it in the system and see if it is stable.

Maybe there are other symptoms that cause this, but this is what happened in my case.

You can even try the hardrive manufacturers diagnostic disk just to make sure too.

worth a try :P
