Samba connecting to windows share
 

I have sucessfully connected to a share on a windows box using samba, but only root has read write permissions. How can I fix it so anyone can read and write to the samba mount??

use the smbpasswd command with the user you would like to be able to use. Then configuring your samba configuration to allow that user to have access to the various files

great. Can you point me to a how to somewhere, I don't quite grasp it all yet. Here is what I placed in the smb.conf file, but it does not work.

comment = export
path = /home/username/NFS ....where the share is mounted
valid users = username
public = no
writable = yes
printable= no

comment is the name you would like to give it
set the path to a place you would like to share
set the valid users to the users you would like to have access, seperated by spaces
public i guess can be either one, which ever makes it work
writable if you want the users to be able to write
i don't think printable is really needed

"man smb.conf"

Rather than "valid users = username" and the same in your path directory, Samba understands %U to declare the variable for username. This should ensure the directory is mounted with permissions so only the user in question has access. However, http://k12linux.org/netadmin/samba.html gives a good overview of a better way of setting permissions on home directories, and also gives a good overview of using group shares + permissions, which is maybe somewhere you'll end heading.
