Samba and unicode/international charachters

The use of international charachters (like едц) functioned perfectly in Samba 2.2.5. However when switching to 3.0.0rc4 all files including any of these letters becomes unredable...

For example:

"this.file.е.is.a.test.txt" becomes "this.file.???????????"

Changing smb.conf and inserting unicode = no solves the problem on the Windows 2003 server; however all WinXP computers now crash when trying to enter the shared folders...

What do I have to do to get the swedish charachters working also in 3.0.0???

Any help is most welcome.
