Samba and FTP help

I'm trying to set up a web server on my linux box. My friend is going to be the person who will be making most of the updates, so I wanted to use Samba or FTP so he could get to /var/www/html/mistislands(my Apache root). When on his XP Pro computer, he can't get to the server with SMB using the ip or the FQDN. I can get my computer, on the internal network, to work as far as SMB goes. With FTP, I have tried 2 different FTP daemons, neither one of them i can get to. Please help!

Eric Montgomery
