Running X-application on a remote AND local machine

I just downloaded a virtual keyboard (xvkbd). What Im trying to do is to control a remote machine using it. There is a game running on the remote machine and I want to be able to escape to the main menu using this virtual keyboard. How can I do this?

So far I changed the $DISPLAY variable to that of the remote machine and can get the game displayed on that machine, but I still cant escape to the menu from the local machine. I made sure the virtual keyboard is focused on that terminal where the game was started. What am i missing?
