Running windows in parallel with linux


Hi every one, i am some what new to linux. i was wondering if any one had a good step by instructions on running windows in parallel with linux.

Depends on what you mean by parallel. If you mean dual boot, there's tons of good guides on how to dual boot your machine.

If you mean on top of, you want to use a virtual machine like QEMU or VMWare. There's also a project called Cooperative Linux that lets you use linux from within Windows (I think it uses QEMU as the virtual machine).

i allready have my computer setup so when it boots i have the option of running linux or windows. i want it so i can run linux, then also have my windows desktop running in a window.

Then you're definitely looking for something like VMWare or QEMU. The only downside to this is you usually have to pre-allocate RAM to the virtual machine. For example, if you have 1GB of RAM, you have to specify that you want the virtual machine to use 512MB of it. Then whenever you're running the VM, you'll only have 512 left for your desktop also.

Are you trying to install it on windows or linux?

ok i downloaded the rpm file from the vmware website. how do i install the rpm file?

There should be a README file in the download. If not, use your package manager to install it. I don't know what distro you're using, but usually rpm's can be installed by just clicking on them...

i am using suse 10.0, when i click on the file it askes me what program to open it with.
