Does anyone know if it is possible running Skype under Wine or Win4Lin, and if so what have the results been and what system are you running the program under.
I would greatly appreciate feedback on this issue even though the Skype people are dangling a Linux version sometime in the future...
however I can't wait for them to do a version at an unknown time so unless someone could inform me on the issue I might have to go back.... yes I said go back to that dreaded OS - and even though I'd have to I would absolutely hate going back to the operating system that cost me so much trouble and development time as Windows did due to it's lack of security...
So if anyone out there has succeeded in doing the above let me know ASAP !!!
Okay the folks from Netraverse had the following to say...
Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, Win4Lin doesn't currently
support sound input, and thus does not support IP telephony via
Windows. While we do hope to support sound input in future Win4Lin
releases, at present we do not have any estimated date when support may be available.

That means WINE is the only alternative to installing Wi#¤&/!#¤%#¤&ws on a dedicated machine - Anybody had any experiences with WINE????
Hi there! I've tried running Skype with Wine version 20031016 [October 16th 2003].
I got an error message right at the start saying it couldn't find the function "CryptProtectData". So my guess is there must be a file or a certain DLL of some sort containing this function...
I'll check out at MSDN... There's probably some info there.
Or else I'll ask a friend of mine who's good at programming Win apps.
Well, I've check MSDN and found out it was in crypt32.dll found under c:\windows\system32\crypt32.dll
So I copied the file I had under my windows partition into my wine windows system dir
eg: /usr/local/wine/wine-c/windows/system/
I got a wine rpm package for Redhat 9 from sourceforge for my processor (athlon) and just installed it en i've got Skype working on RH9 with Wine , no trouble at all , (well a bit of trouble cause i got a bogus microphone) but rh9 wine en skype is possible !!!!!!
thisis my wine version
# wine -v
Wine 20031212
be sure if you try this that no previous wine installation is present on your system , (thats what everyone says when they give advice a new version of wine)
I didnt have to add anytthing in my wine config file by the way .
I'm a newbie so only try stuff that you can undo by yourself , .. this is the first time for that i am able to help (if thats the case) someone else ..
Fascinating... However you mention a bogus microphone and I have to get clarification on that matter as it is the sound part that has troubled those I have asked - Do you mean your mike is physically troubled - or that you are unable to pass sound onto say another user because microphone sound input is not working in the program?
Well, today I bought a new mike cause I thought the old thing had a defective cable , but the brand new one had the same problem , but the person I talked with could hear me but it sounded , he said, like I was drunk and tried to talk underwater ...so it must be the program that can't handle the mike sound to another user ..
But I'm going to try and find out if wine is perhaps configurable to work more fluently with a mike , .. other words , lets go googling ...
If anyone has any tips for this please let me know !
Thanks to your discussions here, I was able to run Skype with wine. I had to change the exsisting wine (from SuSE 9.0) into the 20031221, what suggested here. The brand new 200401xx didn't work.
But still there is a problem. If I'm connected to a other person, the voice connection fades away unless I click frequently the mute or hold button. A cycle last approx. 5 sec. than I have to click again.
The other thing is that the menues are not clickable.
Has someone an idea?
I have not been sucessful in my attempts, mostly cause I was attempting to run wine under Knoppix... I was just having trouble.
HOWEVER, the problems you speak of are NOT exclusive to running skype using wine under linux. The "drunk under water" effect and the "fading away unless I click hold on and off" are very real problems that plague skype even under windows.
So until skype becomes more stable as a program you may continue to have problems. I hope this gives you guys more confidence in knowing its just some faulty programming and not wines fault.
I tried it yesterday, but every time I connected it would disconnect and tell me that my soundcard didn't have full duplex mode. Funny, it works fine under windoze.
The problems I've reported are gone now with the latest Skype version 0.97. There are no fades or anything else wrong. I run it with wine from the command line (terminal) under KDE 3.2 part of the SuSE 9.0 dist.
I think I found also the former problem. It has nothing to do with skype itself. The sound gets disconnected as soon as I switch to another program or window. That makes it very difficult to be ready for a caller. So, I thing the only way to use skype is to make appointments through icq or something else in order to take the call when it comes in.
The menues are not working, but I can live with that. There are other ways to controll the progy.
BTW, I havn't experience any sound or delay problems on my side, but the other party was telling me that my voice comes through a little bit hached.
I made a few changes in the wine.conf. If someone wants to konw that, just post here.
Hey ggtux , reading yout last post here about wine/skype i get the impression that you fixed the "drunk/under water sound" , is that true ? cause if so , i would really like to know how you got it working !! cause mr Google can't help me :-)
sorry for not answering sooner. Actually I don't know what I did. I never experienced a 'under water sound'. And what I hear from other my sound is a little bit choppy but not bad. I hear them all very clear and with no delays, but these guys are windows xp users.
Let me describe what my installation is and what I have changed.
I use SuSE 9.0 and turned off the aRts demon (I don't know for what ever reason it exist?) I updated wine to Wine 20031212 from the wine homepage. The last available version didn't work at all.
Then I edited the wine config like this (only portions):
[Version]
; Windows version to imitate (win95,win98,winme,nt351,nt40,win2k,winxp,win20,win30,win31)
"Windows" = "winxp"
----------snip---------------
[Tweak.Layout]
;; supported styles are 'Win31'(default), 'Win95', 'Win98'
;; this has *nothing* to do with the windows version Wine returns:
;; use cmdline option --winver if you want that.
"WineLook" = "Win31"
--------snip------------------
[WinMM]
;"Drivers" = "winealsa.drv" -- I use alsa, buy can not use winealse.drv ????
"Drivers" = "wineoss.drv"
"WaveMapper" = "msacm.drv"
"MidiMapper" = "midimap.drv"
-------------snip-------------------
[dsound]
"DefaultPlayback" = "1" ; use first device (/dev/dsp)
"DefaultCapture" = "1" ; use first device (/dev/dsp)
;; HEL only: Number of waveOut fragments ahead to mix in new buffers.
"HELmargin" = "5"
;; HEL only: Number of waveOut fragments ahead to queue to driver.
"HELqueue" = "5"
;; Max number of fragments to prebuffer
"SndQueueMax" = "28"
;; Min number of fragments to prebuffer
"SndQueueMin" = "12"
-------------snip--------------------
that's it!
I call skype like:
wine "/home/ggtux/.wine/fake_windows/Program Files/Skype/Phone/Skype.exe"
I also tried to use crossover but it's not working.
After updating Skype to 0.97 last week it seems to getting better with the problem of sound fading.
