running orbiter with wine in opensuse

I can run orbiter (the zip version) using wine, but it loads and runs very slowly. I have not installed directx and am not sure if directx is needed. The box is an hp pavilion a1130n. The 3d driver is 1.3 mesa 7.2 and the os is opensuse 11.1 64bit. I can run 3d games on the box with no problems. Quake 3 arena runs fine. Do I need to tweek orbiter using winecfg?

In the Wine database, Orbiter is reported to work well after applying the patch released in 2010. Did you download and install/apply it as well?
