Running multiple virtual desktops?

I want to run as a user and as root at the same time. I used to do this under Red Hat. You'd hit Ctrl-F8 and log in on a new desktop. But this doesn't seem to work in Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I've been doing that. When I go to f8, I get a black screen with a tiny cursor flashing in the upper left corner. I can't enter any commands. It just sits there and flashes.
