running java applets ?

hello everybuddy,
i am a newbie to the linux environment. i am having
bundles of doubts to ask from installation to compilation of
the java products. here i am opening the first, could anybuddy
make me know how to run java applets at present i have
red hat linux 8.0. i am having my applet under /root. would i
need some utilities/plugins to install, if so, inform me
where i can get and how to install as well as compile. i am
waiting for the reply.

You could run it in a browser if you wanted to...
