Unhappy Running Gaim as a user

I've been having a hell of a time getting Gaim to work as any user other than root.

Initiallly, I installed v0.66 and it runs fine as root, no rpoblems whatsoever. If on the other hand I try to run it as a regular user, it would crash whenever I tried to add an account claiming a core dump error.

I figured maybe the release was not stable and went to v0.64. Again, this version is stable as root, and works fine. However, when I try to add an account, there are no options at all under the protocol drop down menu. Similarly the plugins area has no options listed, though I know the package is installed fine and there a a ton of options as root.

I'm wondering if the problem is that gaim is owned by root, or is some group that a user is not a part of. I can use chmod or chown, excpet I hav no idea who the owner ought to be. Any ideas/ suggestions.
