Running Evolution as another user ... KDE

I use evolution and fetchmail to gather and sort the mail for a couple of accounts and run it as a user (I normally run my desktop as root ... yes I know...).
Running as root in gnome2 I always started evolution with "su -c evolution username" it worked great no problem.
Using kde however, the same command line gives me the evolution splash screen and then nothing.
I know that this is a problem with gnome-session ids and oaf ids but have no real idea on how to surmount this. I have tried starting evolution with --sm-disable and --oaf-private in the above command line and that doesnt work. Any ideas???

I just recently converted from pine to evolution and dont really want to go back

The above wasnt it, or wasnt all of it anyway.

Now even in gnome2 running "su -c evolution username" I get:

GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

Even running x as that user and trying to start evolution it shows the splash screen and then dies. Ever thing was working till a couple of days ago and nothing significant has changed. Running evolution with --debug got me nothing. Screw it anyway. Just converted back to pine, I know that works
