We are planning on deploying the server edition as part of our disaster recovery solution, and one of my colleagues wanted to know if it can be done on a virtual machine.

Has anyone done such a deployment? If so, what would you recommend for hardware specifications on the host system, assuming there will be other virtual machines running, and what issues should I be aware of before proceeding with this course of action?

For must uses, a virtual machine is a real machine.

Using a virtual computer is a part of utilizing hardware more fully.

There isn't a way for us to tell what you may need. Some vm's run on some very very old hardware. Newer hardware and newer vm's integrate more closely and share more real hardware versus emulated devices. If you really need speed then get a server generally. They tend to have more support for commercial uses.

Hard drive amount comes to mind, I'd look at ram most closely. No substitute for it. CPU and virtual technologies help speed.
