Runescape...Can only type in login form sometimes

OK, here's the background. Windows crashed last night, totally dead (every file association was gone from the registry, somehow. Couldn't even open regedit because windows 'didn't know how to handle the file regedit.exe'. (this is a family computer, I guess stuff happens). So, I went to install Windows, but we no longer have the CD. So my only option is to pull out my Mandriva CDs and install. So I do, and it works beautifully. Now, my little brother likes to play a game called Runescape. So, I downloaded the java plugin and installed and linked in the mozilla directory. (following instructions exactly from java.com site) So everything is working. Went to the runescape site and plugin was detected and it started loading the game. Looked like it was going to work. Was presented with the login screen and was able to login fine. Everything worked....at 2 oclock this morning. This morning, little brother wakes up and comes in to play his game. He logs in fine, but then logs out (something about doing a drop trade..or something like that). He then tries to login again, with another username (part of a drop trade I guess) and he can't type into the login form. Weird. So he reloads and still a nogo. So, he goes back to the world select menu and chooses the 'best world for me' option. And, voila, he can login again. But he can't pick up his stuff where he dropped it (because he is in a different world than he was before). I came over to my computer and tried to login (same setup..mandriva 2006, latest JRE) and I too was unable to login. This is using Mozilla Firefox (1.0.6 on mine and 1.0.7 on family PC).

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions here? It is driving him crazy (he actually pays a membership fee to get members only worlds). I am leaving for college in a week and would like to get this all sorted out ASAP.

Thanks,
Kevin

As an update: I installed Opera and enabled java in the opera settings, and lo and behold, it fixed the problem (in opera, of course). I am going to upgrade to FF 1.5 today on my machine and see if that helps me any (any pros or cons to this?)
