run level changes prevented by X

when i run graphical and attempt a reboot or change in run-level my screen goes blank and hangs. Im not sure why this is. My system has a non-graphical login and i go into graphical with xinit. I'm not sure how to propetly kill x either. when i simply kill the process my screen goes blank and freezes.
any suggestions?

Have you tried switching back to CLI "Ctrl + Alt + F1"

tcaptain 06-02-2003 12:39 PM

CRTL-ALT-BACKSPACE will kill X-Windows if you need to.

Does it work?

Distro? Login manager? Video card? You didn't give much info for an answer.

# Configuring X
Linux Hardware Compatibility HOWTO - video cards
The Linux XFree86 HOWTO
Common X configuring tools:
Debian - dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
Mandrake - XFdrake
Redhat 7.3 down - the setup utility leads to several config tools
Redhat 7.3 up - redhat-config-xfree86
You may have these tools:
XF86Setup
XFree86 -configure
Xconfigurator
xf86cfg
xf86config
xconf
ATI Linux drivers
nVidia Driver Installation NHF
nVidia driver page Most likely, you want the Linux IA32 driver

Driver "vesa"

I'm not familiar with their x configuring tool.

You should get a good resolution, I would think. I have an S3 running at 1024X768 OK, but I have that box torn apart at the moment, so I can't give you my config file just now.

I have posted it before, so a board search for "fancypiper" and "savage" should find it for you if you would like to look at it.

i trie the cntl alt backspace and it klobberd x of couse but i was still left with a black screen and hung system.
as far as the configureation appsn there does not appear to be any configuration paramaters that would contribute to the inability to change run-levels after the cessation of x. I can't even get a command prompt when x is killed.

Are you running redhat on that same box as FreeBSD?

If so, mount your FreeBSD when in redhat and try my config settings (a board search for "fancypiper" and "savage" ) and see if they will work in the FreeBSD config file.

wlfdgcrkz 06-03-2003 12:42 AM

yes i checked out your config fancypipper. My sound card wont opperate with any of the s3 or savage drivers (xfree or 3rd party) other than vesa. Additionally im not sure where in the config file proper shutdown is configured. Unless of course this is a just a condition resulting from an unsupported driver/card config.
