run-away middle button scroll in Firefox

I have a trackpoint mouse (eraser thingy between keys G and H) with three buttons. When I use it to scroll within Firefox, I get run-away scrolling.

Normally, I get a circle-and-dot to indicate that middle button scrolling is in progress. This target goes away and the page scrolls vertically until it reaches the bottom of the page. None of my interventions will interrupt this page motion.

I'm running Firefox v3.6.3 on Ubuntu Jaunty.

Can someone help me stop this and make things work correctly?

I thought that was only in Windows?

Middle-button scrolling is available in both win-dose and linux X11.
There has always been a dance to enable it for X11.
Look here http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...er-key-761510/ for one explanation.

Win-dose has a rectangular scroll-bar mouse icon to indicate that mid-button scroll is active.

On linux, the mouse icon has always been a circle with a center dot and up down arrows.

My trouble involves
  • active middle button scroll
  • mouse icon may or may not appear
  • page scrolls by itself to the bottom of the content regardless of what I try to control
  • scroll speed varies

I just had a thought
Is it possible that this behavior is due to a v_e_r_y__s_l_o_w response from X11? So slow that a large group of mouse scroll events get sent and queued and then X11 takes over and response to this long event list giving the appearance of run-away scrolling?
done thinking
