Rsync is crashing my PC

I'm using rsync to backup my home directory to an external drive. I must have been successful once because I have a full copy of the files on the external drive now.

However every-time I try to bring it up to date by running the rsync command again, it runs for about an hour and then the PC just switches itself off.

Then it keeps rebooting about every 10 minutes, until I leave it switched off for a while. It then works fine again until I try to run rsync.

How do I start to trouble shoot this?

If the system reboots regularly until you leave it powered down for a while, the first thing I would check
would be that it's not overheating.

If thermal issues are not the cause, I would begin to look at the power supply next.

Cheers, I suspected as much, although the machine seems to exhibit the same behaviour if I play long flash videos in a browser, so I expect the overheating is happening on a chip - possibly time for a new mother board.
