rsync backup problem

- Debian 3.1
- rsync 2.6.4 (protocol version 29)

I have rsync set up to backup /home from a server to an external USB hard drive.

The rsync backup runs fine but when it has finished the contents of /home on the server disappear. A reboot of the system brings the contents back.

Does anyone know why this might be?

What flags are you running rsync with? Are you running it as root?
By the way, 3.1 is oldstable now, you should upgrade to etch (4.0) when you have the time.

3.1 is actually old old stable. Etch is oldstabl, Lenny (5.0) is stable.
