RPMs not working in RH9

I've had this problem for a looong time. I'm not really sure if it's common or not, but I'm hoping this can be fixed soon, cause it's very annoying ...

1/2 the time, when I download and open an RPM, it just quits and that's it. I see a flash of a progress bar on my screen, but that's as far as it goes. I have to be lucky for an RPM to install right. When I do it via command line, I get dependancy errors. Usually, one would think no big deal, just get the dependancies. But for example, I'm installing the mplayer rpm, and it said I needed mplayer to satisfy the dependancies! Not fonts or trivial things like that, the actual RPM was requesting it's own RPM to be installed to satisfy the dependancies before you install it! It's rediculous. I have to admit I am a bit pestered about it.

And ideas? This is a pretty fresh installation of RH9, and I've been in the linux scene for a while, so I know RH9 isn't screwed up ...

I woulda suggested the command line options myself...but that mplayer story is strange...

Anyhue...i like the "automatic update" options. I currently use apt-get and there's also Yum...which i will try eventually...
