RPMs are CRAP!

im a noobie. obviously, because im bagging out linux.

ive been spending the last week or so trying 2 different types of distros. the first one i tried to install was gentoo. i actually got it after the 4th go. it took me a few days. i decided to change to SuSE when i couldnt get my wireless pc card to work. it does work in SuSE, but i cant connect to any networks yet, but i havent troubleshooted all the problems yet, so thats another story...

wow, way off track...

anyway, ive decided that rpms are crap! EVERYTIME i try to download something and install it, it wont because there is a dependency that it needs. so i download that dependency and then that one wont install because that needs a dependency too!!! holy crap, and so i try to download that one and either 1, i cant find it or 2, if i do find it that one needs a dependency too!!!

is there a way around this??? i like the emerge thing in gentoo where you can download a package and if there are dependencies it will download those too... (i wasnt with gentoo that long, but can you emerge pretty much any program you want?)

my problem is amule - www, amule, org (sorry about the commas. i havent made 5 posts yet.)

i just cant get it up and running. if i had gentoo, would i be able to emege amule?

is there an alternative to rpms so that if i download something, it will install and not ask for another dependency?

crikies, im really starting to get the shits with linux here... sometimes i wonder why i bother. how can so many people like linux if you can never install anything, or it takes a week to install a basic wireless card that w*****s detects immediately?

please help, and please change my mind about linux because i really really think that there is a future (bigger than the w word) for it and i want to get in on it asap!

I guess it's a requirement for total newbies to come barging into a forum and loudly proclaim how stupid linux is. Can't possibly have anything to do with the lack of experience so it must be linux every time.

What the noobies don't realize sometime is how this makes them appear. It's like they run in shouting "HEY EVERYONE. I"M AN IDIOT. WOOHOO. LOOK HOW STOOPID I AM"

Now, have you discussed the wireless card problem with the manufacturer? You will note that they supply a windows driver. Did they supply a linux driver? Why is it linux fault it doesn't work?

RPM's are just one system of packaging apps. It can be a drag getting all the dependencies, but it does tell you what you need. I think you need some more reading maybe. You could also install the source and compile it but I have a feeling that might be to difficult for you...

Hard responce? sure. bad intro from you, sorry. I'm here to help if I can, but I don't care if you use linux or not.

What the noobies don't realize is how thin-skinned the Linux community really is.

Agree with the newbies. It's difficult if you don't know the dependencies till you have done downloading and then realise there is one more, till you have done downloading and then realise there is one more, till you have done downloading and then realise there is one more, .. you know.

So whats the solution? I think its a a good package / bundle / friendly neigbourhood linux resource person.

Likewise about the wireless card.

I never said Linux was stupid or bad. In fact I love Linux...too bad for some god-awful reason it won't let me boot into Windows so, till I can figurre that out it's off my machine. I can't have my PC down, I'm on a deadline for a book and need to have it done soon.

Speaking of Linux....are there any SuSE 9.1 books that I can pick up? I've seen guides for Mandrake and Redhat but nothing for SuSE.

Yoda, If you can, Install Slackware and use swaret to upgrade everything, It has worked great for me. I started out on RH and i also went through the rpm dependency hell and it sucked.

Occassionally linux will screw up during an install and won't let you boot windows. This usually doesn't happen and if it does it usually can be fixed. But it gets a lot of complaints.

IF you install windows on a linux machine it will screw it 100% every time (tho sometimes the linux partition will be okay and allow to fix the mbr to boot linux). But this is never really questioned.

I think MS needs to wake up and smell the future.

Me too.

So, how do you fix the problem? I'd really like to use Linux as the internet portion and Winblows to play games.

Basically, the easiest way is to use either apt or yum to get packages and install them - as they automatically sort out dependencies. There are loads of HOWTOs on this subject

I agree - I loathe and detest RPM's and I've been saying for a LONG time that all they do is confuse and frustrate beginners and make them think all of linux is that bad.

Compile from source, you'll find it easier.

Well, if you purchase Suse Professional 9.1 from Suse, you get the media and 2 fairly decent books about SuSe linux.

I'm not sure (why) but I kind of like SuSe better. it is kind of neat to see the documentation in both English and German. Outside of that, maybe you should pick up a few general Linux books as well as those applicable to Suse.

I'd disagree, as compiling requires that all the necessary tools are installed correctly (gcc, make etc.) plus all the libraries and headers needed are installed (eg. allegro, clanlib etc.) - plus removing something installed using "make install" is often confusingly hard.

I'd heartily recommend yum, especially now cobind's yum gui is in a useable state.
