"RPM -uvh ..." vs Double Clicking 'Install'

After reinstalling Red Hat 9.0 3 times, I'm beginning to respect the need for more reading and less clicking...

Shortly after installing Red Hat 9.0 I tried to uninstall Mozilla and Install Netscape. I also tried to upgrade by installing the newer version of Open Office.

Result? Mozilla uninstalled successfully using the add/remove program.

Netscape: double clicked on the setup program. Netscape 'installed', but no icons were placed in the program menu. I could access it by double clicking on the installed files stored on my hard drive.

Open Office: double clicked on the setup program. It seemed to install, but there was no evidence of the installation afterwards. The original program version was still launching after the installation.

What have I learned? It seems I need to install programs from the Root terminal using the RPM -uvh <RPM package location> command. Is this the best way to do it?

(Please don't sugar coat your responses)

It's -as far as I'm concerned- the only way to
use rpm half-way sensibly because you get the
"full monty" :} .... errors, warnings, success ...

Cheers,
Tink
