Thumbs down RPM (Really Painful Migraine) Problems

I have been having problems with RPMs ever since I got RedHat. THe installer will freeze before the install is complete, it will just ask for root passowrd and then never install, etc. Since there are so many alternatives to software, I would just use another program when a RPM wouldnt work. Now I cant do that..
As most of you know, MSN changed thier chat protocoll on October 15th, which would make it so Trillian users and gAIM users couldnt connect to thier chat service. So shortly after that I downloaded an updated version of gAIM (RPM). First I tried the graphical install. Click on the package. Type in root password. Checking package dependancies, reading header information, etc. All goes fine. No freezing. Then when that is done, it closes the window, and nothing happens. I've waited for 20 minutes, it never installs. After that frustration, I went to the terminal to try it. Su to root, 'rpm -i gAIM.x-x.x.rpm'. The computer thinks some, and then nothing happens. I'm not even returned with the 'root@linuxblackbox #'. Just a blank terminal.
I need to get MSN back. What can I do? Is there a better version of the package manager out? Or do I need to manually install gAIM?

A very annoyed,
LBB

No wonder I just install from source instead of messing with the rpms...

Sounds like you might need to rebuild the rpm database...
rm -rf /var/lib/rpm/__db*
rpm -vv --rebuilddb

I was having the same problem where it would hang and rebuilding seemed to help.
good luck

Blinker_Fluid owns !
I tried to install the wrong gcc packages recently, and it did something wonderful to my rpm installer. I tried rebuilding the database yesterday, but it didn't seem to work. Then I tried what you suggested, and it's wonderful again. A thousand thank you's, my friend.

Now that the RPM problems are over, I'm going to try installing that DVD player again :-)
