i have just reinstalled redhat 9 on my pc and i wanted to install the mp3 RPM for xmms.
instead of doing it via a terminal i tried clicking on it through nautilus. the mouse locked up and i had to turn the computer off by hitting the reset button.
my pc came back on and sorted itself out. i tried to play an mp3 but it didn't work so i assumed that the RPM hadn't installed. i tried to install it in a terminal, but i was told that it was already installed (i have cut and pasted what i wrote and the response below).
[root@localhost xmms]# rpm -i xmms-mp3-1.2.7-13.p.i386.rpm
package xmms-mp3-1.2.7-13.p is already installed
it seemed that it had installed but was faulty. i then tried to uninstall it, but it told me that the RPM hadn't been installed. (see below)
[root@localhost xmms]# rpm -e xmms-mp3-1.2.7-13.p.i386.rpm
error: package xmms-mp3-1.2.7-13.p.i386.rpm is not installed
what do i do now? i cant install it because it's already installed and i can't uninstall it because it's not installed. wierd. does this happen often with RPMs?
i just installed Redhat yestarday.
I upgraded xmms to 1.28, however Xmms reads throught the file extremely fast with no sound.
I did a search on the problem, and found a thread very similiar to the problem but had no response.
At another site, i was suggested to install a mp3 rpm for it, this is what i got though
[root@localhost downloads]# rpm -ivv xmms-mp3-1.2.7-27.p.fr1.i386.rpm
D: ============== xmms-mp3-1.2.7-27.p.fr1.i386.rpm
error: open of xmms-mp3-1.2.7-27.p.fr1.i386.rpm failed: No such file or directory
D: found 0 source and 0 binary packages
I had the same thing happen to me. The files were playing very quickly and I discover that they were creating *.wav files in my home dir. To fix this all you have to do is go to the menu then go to options>preferences the look at the pull down menu at the bottom of the window for output type. Make sure that esound or whatever your sound system is labeled is the selected option. Hope that works for you.
