rpm is broken

rpm broke. it just freezes. killing it doesnt seem to help. it takes a complete reboot to get it to install a package again. when it does work it only works for one or 2 packages. yum and apt make it even less reliable. I have uninstalled yum and apt thinking that it may help nut with no luck. What can i do for a clean install?
thanks

Yeah nakkaya is right. This is usually caused by a lock file in the rpm database. Its a good idea to delete the database before you rebuild it:

rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*
rpm --rebuilddb
