RPM Install freezes in SuSE

Can someone help me? I'm having a problem with SuSE 9.0. Nothing appears to be corrupt, since I've installed it and formatted about 4 times now and it always does this. When I first noticed it was when I was installing Ximian Desktop. It would try to install package like Evolution but would just freeze and I'd have to kill it. Same with gnome-pilot. Finally I told it not to install thost programs and it worked. But when I try to install OpenOffice it does the same thing. Even if I actually download the evolution RPM or other programs it still freezes half way through. Most RPMS work but a lot of them don't. Does anyone know what would cause that? I'm going to be uninstalling really soon if I can't figure this out because I need certain programs. Thanks.

I'm running into something weird like that too now that I've installed Ximain2 on Suse9.
I don't know it its related, but whenever I try to use Yast to install software, it freezes on the "Checking Depencencies" step.
I also tried installing an RPM from the command line and got an error about "not getting control over /var/lib" or something to that effect?
As an experiement, I tried the newly installed Red Carpet updater. I think that is what is causing my conflict with Yast. I say that because what started all of this is when I tried to install XCDroast with Yast it failed. In looking at the Red Carpet updater, it appears that it wants to take over for Yast in the sense that I had it search for the XCDroast package which it found and promplty installed with no problem whatever.
I've used Red Carpet with RedHat before and at the time, it didn't offer very many channels. Now it seems that it will update much more than just Evolution. I think it will update Suse too.
