RPM Install and Uninstall problems.

Hello All,

I have been having some funny issues with MySQL RPM that I have been trying to install.
I have already once installed the MySQL-server-4.0.21-0.i386.rpm package. Something went wrong with this installation and I have never been able to connect to the MySQL Server.

I try to remove the software or uninstall it by using the command
"rpm -e MySQL-server-4.0.21-0.i386.rpm"
When I do this I get an answer that says
"error: package MySQL-server-4.0.21-0.i386.rpm is not installed"

But then when I give the command "rpm -i MySQL-server-4.0.21-0.i386.rpm"
I get an error message that reads
warning: MySQL-server-4.0.21-0.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 5072e1f5
package MySQL-server-4.0.21-0 is already installed

Now I have 3 questions

1). What do I do to just blow off the MYSQL install on my machine completely just like in WIndows machine and install a brand new version ??

2). Can any package I install using an RPM also get completely unistalled by using some other rpm command.??

3). I am really having trouble installing and removing anything in my Fedora Linux. Are there any articles I can read to learn more about these ??

THanks in advance for your help.

Warm Regards,
Pradhip.S

1) "rpm -e MySQL-server-4.0.21.i386" (No .rpm extension)
OR
"rpm -Uvh MySQL-server-4.0.21.i386.rpm" This is used to upgrade the package and gives you human readable verbose messages about what it is doing.

2) "rpm -e packageName" (Again no rpm extension)
To find the package you want to remove, use "rpm -qa" which will give a list of all the rpm packages installed.

See "man rpm" for details, and note that you must be root.

3) Checkout apt4rpm.sourceforge.net This is a port of debians apt-get system for rpm based distros, like Fedora. This helps sort out the dependency issues by automatically installing them.

I hope this helps
