Unhappy RPM hangs on my system

Hello, I tried all of the above, and nothing works.

especially, I tried:
rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*

I also tried rpm --noscripts

strace of my rpm command is:

stat("/usr/lib/rpmdb/x86_64-redhat-linux/redhat/__db.001", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=16384, ...}) = 0
open("/usr/lib/rpmdb/x86_64-redhat-linux/redhat/__db.001", O_RDWR) = 8
fcntl(8, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0
fstat(8, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=16384, ...}) = 0
close(8) = 0
open("/usr/lib/rpmdb/x86_64-redhat-linux/redhat/__db.001", O_RDWR) = 8
fcntl(8, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0
mmap(NULL, 16384, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_SHARED, 8, 0) = 0x2a98782000
close(8) = 0
futex(0x2a98782000, FUTEX_WAIT, 2, NULL) = -1

Can someone give me more background information regarding this.

I have only had this problem on one particular system:
Dualcore E6420
Redhat 4.4 or centos 5.0 or centos 5.1, always same hang during the rpm install.
The only way I got it to work was by installing vmware and installing Redhat 4.4 under that virtual machine. But I need very high performance (VOD server application), so I need to run linux natively.

Do you think there is something I should disable in the bios of that machine?

Thanks for any hint you can share!

Question disabling L3 cache in Bios seems to help ...

I just disabled the L3 cache of the processor from the Bios, and now I can install my RPM.

Can someone please comment why that seems to solve the problem???

Thumbs up

What really solved the problem of rpm hang for me was erasing files in /usr/lib/rpmdb/x86_64-redhat-linux/redhat/__db.00*
then running rpm --rebuilddb

So it seems I am one of the very few running Linux in 64 bit mode ...

strace command helped me find the solution
