rpm - failed dependencies

I am trying to install tpb-0.6.1-0.rhfc1.dag.i386.rpm (for thinkpad buttons to work on an ibm laptop) and am getting failed dependency on the file: libxosd.so.2 (xosd - used for on screen display - like for volume etc).

so i downloaded the xosd-2.2.5 source and configure/make it - which seemed to all go ok.

but now it is still failing with the same dependency problem.

I guess the main question is where does rpm search for installed libraries? because i found the file 'libxosd.so.2' (the file which was causing the problem) within the install directory of 'xosd-2.2.5' and copied it to /lib directory - but the dependency still fails.

little help?

I think it looks at the database of installed rpms rather than at what's actually there so if you install it using something other than rpms, rpm won't find it. Try installing it with
rpm -ivh --nodeps tpb-0.6.1-0.rhfc1.dag.i386.rpm

if the libxsod thing is the only dependency, it should work. If it doesn't, remove the rpm again.

well i tried the no deps option and couldnt get it to work - so must of missed something - but i did one last final search for xosd rpm and actually found it... last time i could only find rpm's for xosd source, not binary. so i got it and rpm'd xosd then tpb, and both installed ok - now i just gotta get it all to work..

thanks quatsch - now i know how rpm knows whats installed etc... seems a bit silly to me, cause it sort of excludes being able to download the source and compile software - and have rpm recognise it. Maybe there is a work around for this? i dont know...
