Question rpm's won't install -- help


after looking through the default themes of kde I decided to d/l some new ones and implement them... i d/l a package with several themes. this is what happened when i tried to install it from the gnome terminal:


[r-lass@localhost Ryans Folder]$ rpm -i kdethemes-fermi-3.i386.rpm
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

and, after d/l another package (WineHQ) and trying to install it, the same thing happened. do i need to reinstall linux am i getting the wrong d/l files... i have an i386 motherboard and i am running mdk9.1.

if you could help that would be awesome

you need to be logged in as root, not r-lass
to install rpms

hey, that is cool. thanx for the help, but how to i log on as root? i guess you can tell im a beginner... lol. any help is appreciated, thanx

su -

and enter your root password when prompted. Tyoe "exit" to leave.

su root

cool, thanx for the help... but now this error message occurs:

[root@localhost rpms]# rpm -ivh wine-20030508-mdk9.1.i586.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:wine error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/lib/wine/wine/kernel32.dll.so;3edd160d: cpio: read

what now...?

try rpm -Uvh wine-20030508-mdk9.1.i586.rpm
