rosegarden doesn't play - rosegardensequencer crashes

i'd like to use rosegarden to write music and play it. i followed instructions on (rosegarden's Free Companion). from this i understand i should install at least rosegarden and qsynth. i'd like to use qsynth with alsa rather than jack, because i had problems configuring jack and i really just need to make it play notes. when i run rosegarden from the command line i get this:

renna@thirdeye ~ $ rosegarden
renna@thirdeye ~ $ Rosegarden ArtsDriver - Arts 1.4.3
RosegardenGUIDoc::xmlParse (reader.parse()): 10ms elapsed
MCOP ObjectManager: can't find implementation for Arts::MidiPort.
KCrash: Application 'rosegardensequencer' crashing...

and then a kde window pops up stating that rosegardensequencer crashed and caused signal 11 (SIGSEGV). this is the backtrace (don't know if it can help)

rosegarden does fire up but another pop up window states that rosegardensequencer couln't be started and that sound and recording won't be available for this session (and indeed they aren't)
any ideas? i have an internal sound card (intel8x0), i'm using udev on gentoo

there is a file in the rosegarden source
/docs/howtos/artsd-mcop-notes

that tries to explain what to do
