root-tail help!

i've downloaded and installed several incarnations of root-tail but all to no-avail, yet i know it works as it should because when i sign off the last thing i see is all the root-tail requests i issued trying to get it working (but it was working)

so according to his documentation, nautilus is causing him some grief:
Below are the first twelve lines of the Changes file, taken directly off my harddisk.

- replaced default font by "*" to "ensure" some font is found.
- accept hexadecimal window ids, as does everybody else(?).
- made it compile with ansi-89-based compilers again.
- add hack to support nautilus (not very stable, nautilus should
either use extended window manager hints or __SWM_VROOT, as everybody
else does).

- do not initialize the window twice (fixes problems with multiple
- new option: -minspace.

now my questions are:
1. does anybody know what i might be doing wrong ?
2. if i'm doing everything right, should i expect anything different if i recompile nautilus ?
3. is there an alternative?, i'd really like to have system log files displaying...

thanks much!

All I can say is that if the program author seems to
have troubles with nauseous, you shouldn't use gnome
if you want root-tail ... I have it working perfectly in
Fluxbox, overlaying a dark background image with
root-tail's output ;)

Good point!

and it's interesting that you refer to it as "nauseous"...

he he

but as i'm writing this, i'm recompiling "nauseous" for the first time with no apparent differences in the compiler options... somehow, i think i'm going to be sorry i tried this....

Well, that was pretty interesting...!

I recompiled Nautilus and then did a checkinstall and then crossed my fingers...

It worked!

And it only seems to be acting tiny bit different but I really can't tell for sure, if i didn't know better i'd say it was a bit more sensitive to the mouse but other than that it's fine. The only trouble I had was signing off the account when it just kinda stalled.... it must have been writing it's session files when it ran into something. Anyhow that required me to recreate the account but I was able to salvage everything and basically redo my desktop in only a few minutes (many components were a simply drag & drop from my old account folder).

But the next question is....

Do I dare make any changes?

he he he - we shall see!
