Root Server & Firewall[s]

Hi,

i've just signed up for a root server running RH 7. I am naturally concerned about security issues and am looking to place a firewall on the server. The server is going to need to have several ports opened as its primarily going to provide IRC BNC's.

Can anyone guide me towards a good FREE firewall that would allow me good control other the ports that I want?

Many Thanks
demonicnewbie

Hi,

I posted a very similar subject a few days ago, as I'm in a similar situation as you. Please see my post here, as there's a few links which might be some use to you.

LOL sorry about that. I should have checked more thoroughly. I just purchased mine from one and one. How long did they take setting the server up?

Still any recomendations for a decent firewall would be helpful

Thanks for a quick and helpful response/link

Demarc's PureSecure was great when I used it, was excellent for web security if that's what you are planning on doing.

:)

Worth a peak nonetheless.

Cool

demonicbnewbie:

After signing up, they took a few days (3 - 4) to get in touch with me to 'activate' it. Once I confirmed a few details, the guy said it'd be ready within five days - It was up and running the next (though it did take a few to register to domain). Once that was done, everything seemed spot-on. I broke it the same day, and after a quick signed fax to One & One, they had flashed it for me, leaving me with an un-broken server. No charge of course.

We were using a proffesionals package and we kept getting an error quite often saying 'CGI limits reached.' - which was really annoying, and isn't technically downtime so we can't do anything about it. :(

The Root Server's been great though so far - great service, and you get the Ensim Appliance server software which makes administering the sites and hosting packages a doddle. Good choice of host. :D

Anyway, back to it :study:

Steve.
