ROOT password of live cd's

Ok very stupid, I had DSL linux (damm small linux) and knoppix. I had a very hard time finding out how to change the root password. After a day or two searching I found how to do it. It was something (in xterm) with a U*** (a command) and then passwd root with maybe some other options.

Then I had a textbox to change the password without a prompt asking me for the old password. What's the command again?

and one less important question. Is this option also available for other distro's of linux. Because if it is, it's extremely easy to change the root's password and that's not the idea i guess...

Thx
wannes

Most live cds have a "root shell" that you can use, so you don't need the root know the root password. Just run it from the menu and bang, got root.
