root or user

Hi

I'm following a link to install awstats, after many days I still can't get it right

http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/...s_Installation

Do you install this as the user or as root user

Can you give more details? Like why it's not working? Where are you getting stuck? The link you posted seems to contain all the instructions you need.
Just to clarify, you don't need to be root in order to "install" things: you need to be root when you want to write files in a directory where you don't have permissions to write. So if you're putting awstats in your home you shouldn't need to become root, while if you're putting it elsewhere, likely /usr/bin, then normally yes.

may be some one out there can help me alittle, I'm all most there

I found some older notes I had from a pass install, its been some time since I've run awstats

here's were I'm at.

Code:
root@rockinghamgateway:/usr/local/awstats/tools# ./awstats_updateall.pl now
Running '"/usr/local/awstats/wwwroot/cgi-bin/awstats.pl" -update -config=www.rockinghamgateway.com -configdir="/etc/awstats"' to update config www.rockinghamgateway.com
Error: AWStats database directory defined in config file by 'DirData' parameter (/var/lib/awstats) does not exist or is not writable.
Setup ('/etc/awstats/awstats.www.rockinghamgateway.com.conf' file, web server or permissions) may be wrong.
Check config file, permissions and AWStats documentation (in 'docs' directory).

root@rockinghamgateway:/usr/local/awstats/tools#
does that mean I have to change the DirData' parameter (/var/lib/awstats) to /etc/awstats ?

I changed a couple of things like the DirData' parameter to /etc/awstats and the log file to /var/log/apache2/access.log

and I get this

Code:
root@rockinghamgateway:/usr/local/awstats/tools# ./awstats_updateall.pl now
Running '"/usr/local/awstats/wwwroot/cgi-bin/awstats.pl" -update -config=www.rockinghamgateway.com -configdir="/etc/awstats"' to update config www.rockinghamgateway.com
Update for config "/etc/awstats/awstats.www.rockinghamgateway.com.conf"
With data in log file "/var/log/apache2/access.log"...
Phase 1 : First bypass old records, searching new record...
Searching new records from beginning of log file...
Phase 2 : Now process new records (Flush history on disk after 20000 hosts)...
Jumped lines in file: 0
Parsed lines in file: 18611
 Found 1057 dropped records,
 Found 0 corrupted records,
 Found 0 old records,
 Found 17554 new qualified records.

root@rockinghamgateway:/usr/local/awstats/tools#
so that bit worked

I did a bit more research and found this page.

https://calomel.org/awstats.html

Quote:
This worked for me on Ubuntu 10.04 command line server ( CLI )
and I used awstats 7.0

One question thou, when it out puts the pages can you out put one page with a left hand meun instead of all the links to pages at the top. ?

were would that be in my awstats.www.rockinghamgateway.com.conf under what option ?

besides that I protected the page and all is well
