Root on Software RAID

I'm using Gentoo with the development sources. I have installed the distribution on a spare drive and I'm trying to work to place that install on a RAID (2 other drives), and then set the raid as root and boot from it.

First, I first compiled the kernel with the RAID/LVM module set to load outside of the kernel. I realized this was a mistake so I rebuilt the kernel with the RAID/LVM module installed into the kernel, however now when I boot the md module fails and I can't mount any raids.

I've tried doing the mkinitrd trick to create a ramdisk so that I could boot with the RAID/LVM module outside of the kernel, but it gives me the error "All your loopback devices are in use." I rebuilt the kernel with the loopback device support and still no go.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
