Im sorry if this is the wrong forum, but could someone please tell me how to log in as root? I am using madrake linux and it automatically brings me to the desktop. If i log out, and hit ctr alt f1 it goes to this black screen where i can log in as root, but then cannot get to the desktop. question #2 why does linux tell me that a cannot access the usr/share directory? I am trying to intall my alcatel speedtouch usb modem, and i am supposed to put a mgmt.o file into the usr/share/speedtouch dir. when i try to do that is says access denied or something. So I can't get the .o file into the speedtouch directory... anyone have the speedtouch USB and can give me an easier way to get this thing working? Sorry for the long post, complete noobie here.:newbie:

The first thing you could do is make a terminal and go:

% su
password: "put in the root password"
# cp path/to/file/mgmt.o /usr/share/speedtouch/

if you get an error you might have to go:
# mkdir /usr/share/speedtouch/


If you're uncomfortable with the command line, you should be able to logout once you're logged in as a normal user and login as by just putting root as username in the login screen.

you can't enter a name in the login screen, its chosen on a list, and my username is the only one on the list

You login as a normal user, open a console window and type: su -
The su command allows you to be another user (including root).

According to Mandrake, in order to make root appear on the login screen,
you will have to properly adjust the user hiding options in the Login Manager section of the KDE Control Center

You can boot your system in runlevel 3 (text mode).

Another example of how mandrake makes it easy for newbies ;-) . There should definitely be a configuration option for KDM that lets you choose 'login as root'. Look in the control panel for KDE first and then in the one for mandrake.

Can you su and then open a konquerer window? you might havve to go xhhost +localhost first. But that would give you a konq window with superuser access.

so i hit ctr alt f1 and login: root password: blah blah ok? then i do % su
password: "put in the root password"
# cp path/to/file/mgmt.o /usr/share/speedtouch/

if you get an error you might have to go:
# mkdir /usr/share/speedtouch/

now i hit ctr alt f7 an im back into the destop. and guess what... now there is a file in the destination labeled as "D" i can't delete it, i cante rename, and when i try to open it, it asks what program i want to use... and i have no idea. and i guess after i return to the desktop im no longer root becuase it says access denied for everything i try to do with that file.

By default Mdk uses MdkDM as it's display manager (aka DM or login manager) You can either install the KDM which lets you enter usernames, or adjust the kdm's settings in the KControl Centre, and Mdkdm will follow the changes.

If not, tell us what you need to accomplish.

If you use the K Control Centre to adjust the KDM's settings, even though you are using Mdkdm instead, it will act very similarly as it uses the same config file. Using KDM is easier, it's provided with 9.1.

UPDATE: i got the file into the correct folder throuh nautilus. BUT now it doesn't tell me what to do and does not connect. SPEEDTOUCH USERS HELPPPP:confused:

As the clear instructions from Newman_SCO were stated in the other thread you started about this subject (why are you opening so many threads about the same thing, anyways? You'll never get fucused help that way) you will have to reinstall your modem now that you have the proper file in the proper spot. Open your mandrake control center and reinstall your modem and create an internet connection. Its easier to do it through Mandrake than that OS you just left. I'll answer your "how do I get root from the login" question as well. You can do this with a friendly GUI tool too. Look under your "K" menu and try to find, under system or other, logindrake. Or, under the Mandrake control center (if its still configured like the one for 9.1), you can choose to change the login properties. You'll have to uncheck root as a hidden user. Exit. DOne
When you next encounter the login box, root'll also be an option. But, most things you need to do, you can do from a root console, which you just need to have an open terminal for and "su" into it.
