I admit that I do most of my CD ripping with CDex on my win2k box. However, due to my win2k box dying yesterday (bad mobo I think), I have been using grip & ripperx on my mandriva 2006 box.
Ripping an average length CD takes about the same time as the CD length, ie - it is ripping at approx 1x. I tried grip, and ripperx and they are both ripping at around 1x.
I tried marking the Disable Extra Paranoia in ripperx, but that did not noticably speed things up.
What do I need to do to rip at a decent speed? BTW - on this same machine I used to use FC2, 3 & 4 and grip ripped fairly quickly, 5x-10x. Its only under my recent install of mandriva 2006 that I am having very slow ripping.
the point is, is that on the same machine: under FC, grip ripped fast, under mandriva 2006, grip rips super-slow. It has to be something outside of the actual program, and I'm asking what else it could be... I mean, I'm using the exact same hardware, including the same burner, now under mandy 2006 that I had for 2 years of FC. FC ripping was fast, mandy ripping is 1x... somethings not right.
Something with DMA, or... ?? I don't know much about that stuff under linux, yet...
Last time I tried sound juicer (its been a while) there was no choice of bitrates, just 128 (or even LESS), if you like it or not. I don't.
the only time i had problems ripping CDs with ripperX or Grip was when i had a motherboard that used a VIA chipset, a couple of months ago i bought a new mobo that used a nVIDIA nForce2 400 chipset and the ripping problem mysterously disappeared (wierd but true)
