rhythmbox - no mp3 plugin?

I just emerged rhythmbox and when I try to import any mp3 files I get the message:

"There is no plugin installed to handle a MP3 file."

I have gstreamer installer, with the glame plugin and the base plugins. The only thing I can think of is that I don't have the gstreamer player installed? But that looks more like a video player and I don't know if it would be required for rhythmbox anyway. I can't install it because it's masked for x86 and I'm on AMD64.

Any suggestions? Let me know if you need any more info.

Thanks,
Zac

for what it is worth - I think, gstreamer is like the foundation of all the other audio and video-tools in gnome
I built the system myself - and I have it - and from what I remember - it was a required part which was needed to be there, when compiling the other parts - you should have seen some messages referring to this during the ./configure stage of your build-process for rhythmbox
...maybe you still have the configured source and could check the config.log there

jomen,

I have pretty much all of the gstreamer parts and plugins and whatnot, just not the player application because it apparently doesn't work on amd64. I'm running gentoo and portage does all the compiling and configuring + deps for me, so I'm not sure if I have a config.log.

Is there any way to tell just what the MP3 plugin would be? is this just a simpler way of saying the gstreamer mp3 plugin? Because I have that installed.

Thanks,
Zac

Do you have gst-plugins installed - I do (version 0.8.1) - because I think this is where to look for rather than gstreamer itself - someone please correct me! I just have it this way and it all works, so I'm assumig that this is correct...

to not mess things up - because I dont know if one is supposed to run commands like this inside the portage-tree, do this:

copy the source of gst-plugins to another place - then run:

./configure --help | less

this tells you about mp3 in exactly two places: related to "lame", which is an mp3-encoder and related to "mad" for decoding mp3

here is the result - when I run ./configure (this will take quite some time)

./configure --prefix=$GNOME_PREFIX
.
.
.

I think - originally I added "--enable-xine" to this command - this here was just to check...

To update the list of available plugins (after installing them), you would need to run
"gst-register" - I know that cured some problem for me - but - this was some time ago and I don't remember exactly...
This might even be the only thing to do here...
