Angry RHEL4u4 (updated from u1) libs problem /lib/i686/libpthread.so.0

Hi!

my box is a generic laptop running RHEL4u4 (standard Kernel 2.6.9-42 i686 single CPU).
everything was running peachy since i upgraded from U1.

All was working for the longest time and i'm not aware of any
boobos commited (forcing rpm installs etc.)
now merely our of the blue i get this message, following simple commands as ls and rpm
/lib/i686/libpthread.so.0: version `GLIBC_2.3.3´ not found (required by /lib/tls/librt.so.1)

unsorted thoughts:
i would try to reinstall glibc-*, but can't since the rpm command gives me the same response.

I'm a tad out of my depth here, but i think something about the Library linking,
did get a serious whack.

I'd love to check which glibc* libs i lost, but cant look since ls does not work.

did superficial googles on similar sounding problems but have not found the way to happiness yet.

Ages ago i dimmly remember something similar on RH9and/or8 after a (kernel-)upgrade it required
to set LD_KERNEL_ASSUME="Kernelver" eg. now "2.6.9" then rmdb -initdb
tried that and linux rescue, but no luck so far.

Any help appreciated.

thanks
