RHEL4 and daemontools .. won't stop the service

We've been using daemontools as a great way to ensure services start and 'stay' running'. This has been working great for years, ... we always stop and start the service using the daemontools svc -d 'service_name' and svc -u 'service_name' commands, BUT recently this has failed to STOP the service (doing a 'ps' still shows the same PID).

Has anyone else seen this problem? Is it a Redhat (RHEL4) issue? Is there a work around?

thanks in advance.

ps. is there a good alternative to daemontools?

Yeah, create yourself a real init.d script. I used daemontools at a previous employer, it sucks and we ran into these problems quite often where it wouldn't start or stop services we had running.
